Libraries are often described as community hubs—but what that looks like in practice continues to evolve in meaningful ways.
A recent initiative led by Braswell Memorial Library, in partnership with Nash County Public Health, offers a thoughtful example of how libraries can expand access while maintaining a strong focus on dignity, privacy, and real community need.
Together, they are piloting a public health kiosk inside the library—a simple but powerful concept. Functioning much like a vending machine, the kiosk provides free, discreet access to essential health and safety supplies, allowing residents to get what they need quickly and privately.
The items available were not selected at random. They reflect priorities identified through local data and a Community Health Needs Assessment, and include personal hygiene kits, first aid and wound care supplies, feminine hygiene products, naloxone (Narcan), fentanyl and xylazine test strips, condoms, pregnancy tests, and more.
What stands out in this approach is the intentional design behind the experience.
The kiosk does not require users to provide personal information, reducing barriers and supporting those who may otherwise hesitate to seek help. At the same time, optional, aggregated data collection allows Nash County to better understand community needs and refine the program over time. It’s a careful balance—one that respects privacy while still enabling learning and improvement.
Placing the kiosk within the library is also a strategic choice. Libraries remain one of the most trusted and accessible public spaces, making them an ideal location for services that require both visibility and discretion. This partnership recognizes that meeting people where they are is not just about location—it’s about creating an environment where people feel safe accessing support.
This kind of initiative also reflects themes we’ve seen emerge through our work with Braswell Memorial Library—particularly the community’s desire for expanded access, practical support, and services that meet people in their everyday lives. It’s always encouraging to see those insights take shape in tangible, meaningful ways.
